Subterranean

Monday being one of our first full days off together in quite a while, my husband and I made the totally crazy decision to go on an hours-long hike in the 20 degree weather. Cold as we were, I was so glad we did. We ended up checking out some gorgeous local caves.

Both caves were beautiful and the darkness gave us quite a challenge to shoot in. I could have probably spent all day hanging out in the dark there, listening to the sounds of underground waterways. The water in the main area had frozen into beautiful star-like formations with dagger points crisscrossing in all directions. It was certainly the most unique nature walk yet.

(Late!) Wednesday Nature Walk :: River's Edge

This week's nature walk I really wanted to spend next to the water. Missing  the ocean but being thousands of miles away means that a shallow river with a sandy bank will have to be a surrogate.

It was balmy and almost warm outside, but portions of the water in the shade of the tall trees were still frozen over. I could dip my toes in the rippling current but also admire the crystal patterns on top of the ice and the branches trapped beneath.

Wednesday Nature Walk :: Golden

Yesterday's nature walk was a particularly beautiful one. We seem to have finally figured out the ideal time of day to take everything in and capture the best light. Earlier we'd found a new series of trails that has given us all sorts of new areas to explore, including a forest clearing, this large open prairie area, and a fast moving portion of the river. I can't wait to get photos of the other areas to show you! My favorite finds included some really cute bean pods, an area where a deer had rubbed many of the tree trunks smooth, and an empty bird's nest which I sadly forgot to photograph. It was definitely abandoned though, so we plucked it up and I've brought it home to display.

I leave you with a little sneak peek of tomorrow's outfit post. This gorgeous skirt is actually a refashion that I'm extremely happy with so it will be fun to show you the before/after!

Wednesday Nature Walk :: Panes of Glass

 Necklace \\ Forever 21
Sweater \\ Old Navy
Skirt \\ Vintage
Belt \\ Target
Shoes \\ Thrifted

Yesterday's nature walk was a lovely one. There was still a nip in the air, but not so much that I couldn't stand having my coat off. The lake was still and calm and there were icy fragments on the banks.  We even found a new trail that leads down to a different part of the river.

I really love this outfit... My biggest shortcoming in terms of putting outfits together is how narrow-minded I am about colors that work together. I was even unsure about pink/red, which seems like a fairly basic combination. It encouraged me to try every combination before I dismiss it in my head.

Belated Nature Walk :: Red Riding Hood

Sorry for such a belated nature walk post! Thanksgiving threw off my entire blog schedule and since I have so many families spread out, I have a few extra Thanksgivings to schedule in!

Anywho, yesterday my husband and I took a break from some family gathering time to take a hike in the woods. We picked out a Christmas tree and then I was lucky enough to chance upon some turkey bones and feathers as well as some cow bones! I was so excited! I'm not sure if I believe in that sort of thing, but it's almost as if the universe is sending me a sign.... !

It was a long and exciting day and I am truly worn out. I have a lot of tree decorating and bone cleaning to look forward to this week (and I couldn't be more happy!) And for your enjoyment, here is a silly blooper photo. I have T-Rex arms because I burst out laughing right as my husband took the picture! Rawr.

Wednesday Nature Walk :: Skull and Bones

Yesterday's nature walk was so exciting. All my hiking hopes were fulfilled! I found a totally beautiful, super awesome....

Deer skull!

I couldn't  believe it, I was so excited! I flipped it over to check and see how clean it was, and luckily it was basically 90% perfect. When I saw these fissures between the skull plates I was shocked by how beautiful they are.

It has all its teeth even! No lower jaw, but I can hardly complain about that. We also noticed when we looked around that quite a lot of the body was laying nearby. It wasn't very old because there was still hair and hide attached. Sorry if this picture grosses you out, I was just fascinated by how beautiful the ribs and vertebrae were!

Since we didn't have any way to carry it out (and didn't want to touch it!) my husband rigged up a little carrying device using some vines he found nearby. I was pretty impressed by his resourcefulness!  I've got the skull in some water now to finish cleaning it up and I'll be giving it a light bleach/sanitizing with hydrogen peroxide. Don't worry I will most definitely have more pictures of it soon!

Wednesday Nature Walk :: Amber is the Color

A new tradition is born! My husband and I took advantage of our Wednesday off to take a lovely hike in the nearby park. There turned out to be so much to explore! We've only barely scratched the surface, so we decided to make the Wednesday Nature Walk a tradition. As you can see, it's quite lovely. We both can't wait to go back.
